Continued from last post

During the week the older boys, Cesar and I have been working on the costumes for their upcoming festival on July 5th. Cesar is very creative and the boys love flirting with all the girls at the womens center. On Friday after before lunch I went to the park and played some futbol with a group of the boys. I think is goes without saying that I got smoked. I did have a lot of fun however and they keep asking me to play so I guess I am not to much of a disappointment. At the start of the game we all gave 50 cents and I guessed it was to go to the winning team(I know gambling with the kids, shame on me, but I couldn´t play without putting in. It's their park). When the game was over they gave evryone their 50 cents back so I am still confused as to what the heck that was.
That afternoon I left for Pisac and Michelle once again was up for the adventure. We hired a van(5soles each) for the 1 hour ride and set off with my backpack strapped to the top. When we got to Pisac we grabbed Michelle a hostel and then I set off alone to grab a campsite at The Royal Inca Resort. I was dead set on camping for the 2 nights because I had brought my gear all the bway here and if I didn't use it I was going to punch myself in the face. 20 soles a night and I had my own little fenced in area with a firepace, light and outle(really roughing it). I also had full use of the facility which had an olympic size pool, gameroom and showers(hot). It turned out that Cesar and a load of his friends were cvamping right next to me. WE cruised around Pisac(great little village with a massive market) and grabbed a bight to eat at a place called Mullu. Our server there(who I got to know quite well over the 2 days) was named Diego and he is the Peruvian Kramer!!! Again I have a ton of pictures but I can't post them here. We made plans for the morning and I set off for my campsite. Cesar and his friends had told me to meet them at the hot tub when I got back but I didn't know where it was and I was a little shy because of my lack of spanish. I layed back in my hammock and read my book(Running The Amazon, great book) by the light of my headlamp. About an hour later Cesar and his friends came back and were in full party mode. I was already half asleep and loving my hammock so I stayed put and dozed while a party raged around me. I woke in the morning to first light and nread some more then enjoyed a dip in the pool and a hot shower. Michelle and I then had breakfast(awesome all you can eat pancakes for 8 soles) at the Blue Llama which has great food and even better decor. Then we grabbed a cab to the ruins(All you can eat pancakes wiped out the idea of hiking) and enjoyed the day up there until about 1pm. While up there we met a truck driver originally from Lima but now lives in Florida(Christian), took some great pictures with him and bid farewell. We hiked back down to the town and grabbed lunch at Mullu and hung out with Diego amd a great guy from Lima named Steven. I have Steven's info and I hope to see him on my couple of days in Lima, he knows the town and I don't. Michelle headed back because she was headed back to the states in the morning and I lost myself in the market for about 3 hours. Whkle shopping I met Leonardo(not the ninja turtle) who had a booth wher he sold rugs, t-shirts and tapestries. We chatted for a while and sucked down the remainder iof the wine that I had bought at Mullu. I picked up a couple of thigs and he gave me some gifts as well. He also said that if I come back to Pisac I can find him in the same place and he will not hear of me staying anywhere but at his house with him and his family. After shopping I went back to my campsite and relaxed a bit before I gt hungry again and walked back to the town plaza for dinner at Mullu. When I walked in Diego and Steven were in the employee room downstairs watching a movie and invited me in . He gave me the code for the internet(which never did work) and I stayed and watched a great movie with them(Gato Negro, Gato Blanco by director Emir Kusturika). After the movie we all headed upstairs to the restaurant and we ate, had drinks and just cahtted until about 3 hours after close. Also hanging out we Miguel(the manager) and two mmore of their friends who I can't remember their names. I loved it, something abnout being in a restaurant after hour with good conversation that really makes a memory for me.  They all headed out to find a party and as tempting as it was I headed back to my campsite for a good nights sleep in my hammock. The next day was about saying goodbye, exchanging info and figuring out how to fit all the crap I bought in my bag. 4soles and and hour later I ws back in Cusco and sitting on the porcxh of my host families house because I lost my keys(shit). 6 and a half hours later they came home and I pathetically explained in my crappy spanish what happened.
Monday I worked with the kids all day by myself and it was ok but chalenging. I stick to math and that seems to be the best. The Inti Raymi is also getting into full gear and kicked off with a fireworks display last night. Today we went to work with Cesar again and after I sai goodbye to him. I also met Wendy who is from So-Cal and we have been in touch bbefore this because we found out we would be down here at the same time. It is nice to finally put a face to a name. I am cooking dinner tonight foe Marta, Glorinda and Juan so I better go. More to come soon I hope, but who knows with this place. :-) Adios and asta ???

Ullaytaytambo, Pisac and back in Cusco

Sorry but there was no internet in Pisac like I thought there might be.
I will start by continuing with Ullaytaytambo. Michelle and I were the 2 lone adventurers that decided to ditch the van home and stay a night in the quaint little village.  After putting our stuff in the hostel and grabbing a shower we headed out to the town plaza. When we got there(2 minute walk) there was a full on fall down drunk, dance your ass off fiesta going on!!! Turns out that it is the third day of a five day festival celebrating the patron saint of the village, their biggest party of the year!! The only bummer is that we were both beat and we did not feel like a drink at all. We hung out for a couple of hours and watched the band, dancers and drunks but then headed back to the hostel for some much needed rest. We woke to our unplanned alarm clock(bands and dancers that I don't think went to bed) at 7am. There must have been a dozen different musical groups marching around the village at all times. We went to the square and had a great breakfast at Sacred Heart which is a restaurant that gives 100% of it's profits to the Sacred Valley Organizations(mostly related to education). We then looked for the entrance to the free ruins but we were having a hard time locating it. The funny thing is that one of the bands had gone up to them and was positioned in all the windows and doors all the way up on the cliffs!! They hauled everything up(even tubas) and played for about an hour. When we finally found the way up the band had come down and we cruised up. It is beautiful but has different stonework than Machu Pichu, not even close to the precise rock shaping as M.P. had. We tooled around until our camera batteries died(this turned out to be a big mistake) then headed down to join in on the festivities in the plaza. There was so many amazing different dance  groups and all were traditionally dressed to the nines. Now I would love to show you pictures but first of all Inti Raymi is going on here and I am not going anywhere near the Plaza with my laptop where the wi-fi is, so unless I can get internet in my hotel in Lima pictures are done until I get to the states(sorry). Also My batteries had died non the cliffs with the ruins so I didn't get any pictures of the dancing. :-(  After we got our cultural fill we had lunch at Sacred Heart and grabbed a super cheap ride home, but not before meeting a couple of great locals(Roberto and Aliz). The following week with the kids was great. I figured out that since I suck with the language I am of the most help with math, which is a common hated course amongst the children. I ahve also been playing a game or two of chess a day with a few of the older boys. Now everything isn't always fun and games. One of the older boys came in one morning and just started to cry, I couldn't figure out what was wrong so Marta took to him. Turns out that his drunk angry father took to beating his mother in front of him. His mother then, in self defense, picked up a knife and stabbed the father in the neck. This all took place with the 13 year old boy watching. There are terrible things happening all over the world every day and it is sad that such a preventable situation(self control) has to happen. here in Peru physical and sexual abuse is very common and rarely does the violator ever get punished. We also a couple of new young teen girls in the program that can not go home and be alone with there father because of the terrible things that he does to them(they were to embarrassed to go into details). I would like to think that disgraceful acts like this only happen in far away lands but that is not the case and I hope we all do our part to help( I know I can do more).
Sorry to write such downer stuff but that is part of working with kids here and that is what I am doing this and the blog for. On a brighter note the day the boy came in crying I happened to bring in my laptop to show the kids some slideshows I had put together of all of them. We started playing music and in no time he was up with sunglasses and singing up a storm. He sang and danced for about 40 minutes while I filmed some and he entertained the tiny room. I am going to post this so I don't lose it with these stupid computers. I will write another directly after I post this.

.....continued.

So I made the cut-off for Waynu Pichu and I waited for the girls to make it up. Entering Machu Pichu is such an insane experience it is hard to describe. That this civilization built this so long ago is mind boggling. It is so much more than you can imagine. Anyway, we wandered around awhile and took pictures before we had to meet our guide, Flakey Eddie. He was about 30 minutes late of course but he showed and we started our 2 hour very informative tour. After the tour we all relaxed a bit then 4 of us(Vivian, Sorsha, Anna and myself) headed up Wuynu Pichu. The hike has a lot of straight up to it but with some short flat areas, unlike the hike up to Machu Pichu. By this time my stomach was finally easing up and I flew up the trail to reach the summit where hundreds of other tourists sat and hung out(takes a little away from it). We hung out and snapped pics then headed down a different way. On the way down I ran into the Aussies(Thomas and Sara) I was on the train with. I had a very small bottle of Pisco and we all cheersed to the sacred`mountain. I had already ran into the Aussies about 4 other times so we exchanged info so we could share out past and future adventures. After getting down the mountain I explored the rest(not every room) of Machu Pichu including hikes to the Inca Bridge and the Sun Gate. It was time to head back to town(I took the bus down) and board the train for home, not before I change my itinerary. I had decided that I was not going to take the tourbus home but I was going to stay a night in Ullaytaytambo. Michelle liked the idea and joined me. WE bid farewell after the train ride and set to looking for a hostel. We found one but it was hilarious, Electric shower with the switch upside down(Michelle showered first so she was the trial and error), No toilet seat and her kids in the next room. The funniest part is that we had to fill out some very official forms. I will continue about Ullaytaytambo in the next blog but it is time for mr to go because the server keeps shoving free homemade sugar cane alcohol in my face and I can only be rude and resist for so long. I hope you all enjoy the photos and I will try to write from Pisac this weekend. I am going camping in Pisac for 2 nights but there is internet close by. Adios!!
